about

"in order to hear the birds the warplanes must be silent" is a compilation of music and poetry by North Carolina-based artists for a free Palestine. The work arises from an urgent need to express solidarity with Palestinians who are facing genocide in Gaza after decades of occupation and to help generate resources for an international organization fighting for Palestinian liberation.

All proceeds from the compilation will go to Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM.) PYM is a transnational, independent, grassroots movement made up of both young Palestinians who live in Palestine and those who live in exile worldwide as a result of the ongoing Zionist colonization and occupation of their homeland.

The album art is by Saba Taj and Sijal Nasralla, who share this about their work:

“The birds are gossipy "bul buls" that fly and talk shit all over the region. Red triangles on computer screens to show our distance and support of resistance. Fertile hills, wells, and the fruit from Gazas northern market – now destroyed. A sabr cactus which means "patience" in Arabic is a symbol of the resilience of the Palestinian people, they grow everywhere we are and still stand to signify the locations of where we were displaced. The zionists have stolen the cactus as a symbol of national identity so this one is made of plastic, you can buy it on wayfair. Watermelon seeds cause the world is indulging in the fruits of our resistance to oppression. And Sijal’s father’s hand – refugee, shepard, lover, nurturer, calls you forward.”

The title of the album comes from a poem by Marwan Makhoul – a poet from Palestine, born in 1979 in the village of Boquai’a, Upper Galilee. Follow him on Instagram @marwan_makhoul
